Just like engine oils, coolants are becoming ‘engine specific’. In addition to the agents that protect against winter freeze and summer overheating, they include sophisticated chemical ‘packages’ which are formulated to give corrosion protection to the wide variety of different metals - particularly aluminium - and other materials that they will come into contact with.

OAT (Organic Acid Technology) - is the most advanced chemical protection package yet devised. 70% of European-manufactured cars are now factory filled with OAT - red type – coolants.

OAT-based extended-life coolants includes such ingredients as sebacate, 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) and other organic acids, but contain no silicates or phosphates

OAT-based coolants are usually dyed a different colour to distinguish them from traditional green or blue antifreeze.

It's therefore recommended to refill or top-up with a coolant which is either approved by manufacturers or meets their requirements.

If you don’t, there is the risk of mixing two different types of coolant and, at best, significantly reducing or, at worst, cancelling out the protective properties of both coolants.

The corrosion inhibitors in OAT coolants are slower acting but much longer-lived than those in traditional green or blue coolants. Consequently, OAT coolants typically have a recommended service life of five years or 150,000 miles.
