Steering Universal Joints
Does your steering have any "loose" play? Not only does this spoil the enjoyment of the driving experience it's dangerous and an MOT failure.
The above can be caused by 3 things:
1. Worn steering rack.
2. Worn track rod ends.
3. Worn universal joints.
To test for worn UJ's, rock your steering wheel about 1cm (side to side) if the wheels do not noticeably move at least the same amount there is a problem.
Do the same whilst looking under the dash at the column joints (1 at the top 1 at the bottom as it attaches to the steering rack).
If there is little or no movement of the rack then these will require changing.
